R2bees Explained Why Have Changed Their Style

When Ghanaians are still enjoy the fast tempo songs and afro beats which have become dominant all over the world in a short while, music enthusiasts and music lovers would realise that another highlife tune which has received a lot of commendation and radio rotation is “Odo” from Tema based music group R2Bees made up of Paedae and Mugeez.
A quick transition one would say after dropping a much talked about track, “Ajeeii” which went nationwide, the hit makers are now out with “Odo” which is a typical highlife tune fused with rap from Paedae. This terain which seemed quite unexpected.
Responding to questions in an exclusive phone interview with NY DJ, Host of Homestretch on Kapital Radio 97.1MHz in Kumasi as to why the music group would go through such a quick transition to do such genre after “Ajei” which was an azonto track, Paedae of R2Bees, said;
” A lot of people are surprised but I believe it’s a positive surprise and that shows how unpredictable we are but one thing we shouldn’t forget is that highlife is indigenous Ghanaian music and so every Ghanaian artist no matter the genre of music you do must at least do one higlife song since its indigenous to get the connection with the people. That kept us to do this song.”
Although the group explains “Odo” was not really planned, they were surprised at the massive support it is receiving and asked that their fans continue to show them the love they have given them since the days of “I dey mad” and “Yawa Girl”.

BIOGRAPHY OF FIRESTONE

When people find themselves caught in a place where their dreams, hopes and ideas have nowhere to breathe or fly, something happens. Something that is so natural and powerful, like the water we seek when thirsty, or the food we need when hunger takes over. This energy to change, to move in a different direction produces a voice - a voice loud and strong enough to vibrate and shake the wall that attempts to oppress the will of the masses and the fight for the future. From that first small voice that dared to speak, to resist, to protest - a small, but important insult has now grown into a voice of millions that cannot and will not be silenced.

He hails from a small town called Adukorom in the Eastern Region of Ghana, located at the back of Ewukugua and the villages along Akropong Akuapem, it was easy to see that a small, quiet vibration was growing and has reached a pitch that is now heard by the ears of Ghana and beyond.

There has been many who have attempted to deny the force of change as if trying to prevent a flower from its blossom or a mother from giving birth. In every case this deeply rooted will to express what cannot be denied, rises up and forces all of us to recognize and respect this voice that produced the sound: "Dey Dey Under", "Akosua Sie Ho" and "Ejiorma" to name a few, playing along and strong throughout Ghana.

Born Larbi Davis to Madam Charllote Anim on November 28th 1985, is the voice we talking about. In 1998, Larbi 'Firestone' Davis developed interest in music even though his father Mr. Godfred Larbi Dankwa didn't see the future in it, as he wanted his son to become a Banker. Popularly called Firestone, he has made it through thick and thin as it was not easy to get to his current level in the music industry. Whereas still on the verge of learning to better his craft in music, Firestone has collaborated with giant superstars like: Screwface, Keche just to name a few.

Firestone has also performed at noble shows that include sharing stages with Castro, Stay J, Fiifi Sellah, Samini, Opanka, Keche, WhizKeli and the likes. Many might know of Firestone through his version of Gyptian's 'Hold Yuh Riddim' which featured WhizKeli. Firestone is reported to have been initially inspired by his mother Charllote, Ayisha Modi (Managress) and Mr. CNN of 3G Magazine (U.S.A). Firestone performed his way through neighboring shows, only to find himself performing at the 2012 African Cup Event hosted by Tigo at Osu Oxfford Street, Accra.

Firestone is Currently signed to Boe Mo Ala Music, under MODI'S MANAGEMENT, he is been promoted by KELLS EMPIRE. With Firestone he is the only new artist or musician in Ghana  with a lot of  support from Ghanaian  Dj's.

Firestone's interest in Reggae and Dancehall music led him to collaborate with Stonebowy Burniton of  Samini Music and finally, to reconnect with other hip life and hip hop artiste in Ghana. His most recent singles 'Golden Girl' features Ghana's hip life superstar Castro, 'Mede Be Hye Ho', 'Mene Wobe Ye' which features Yaa Pono are ranked among the best top ten songs in Ghana.

Firestone is said to promote the African Culture, Dance, Music, Cuisine, Attire and other aspects in his music. He believes there is no culture in the world that is as rich as the African culture. He frowns upon the fact that we have been influenced by religion, politics, media, and advertising to think our African heritage is primitive, pagan and backward, which is not true.

Firestone is much more than just his music; as beautiful and globally adored as his music is. Indeed he is an intellectual with a great vision for his country and the continent or more simply put, he is a True  Son of Africa.

Guru Explains 'Lapaz Toyota' To The World

There is a growing argument over whether Ghanaian hip life musician Guru’s latest hit single, ‘Lapaz Toyota’, should be rated 18.

This follows claims that the song has some profane notes, with emphasis on a controversial and popular line somewhere in the lyrics which some music observers interpret to mean “Lick my dick”.

However, the young rapper has raised objections, saying the song has got nothing profane in it and denied usage of profane words as “Lick my dick.” “I believe in people and how they feel comfortable with what they think and how they think like. That word is not; lick my dick or hit man. No, no, no, it is far from that.

Even the starting of the song, people have their own way of interpreting. But the word is hikma, it is a hook. I got that idea from an old song. Hikma is a name,” he told NEWS-ONE in an exclusive interview on Saturday evening.

“No, ‘Lapaz Toyota’ is not a profane song. I got this idea when I was driving around Lapaz. That was when I was planning for the new single after my ‘Mmaa Kuo’. So I was trying to target the masses and targeting the masses is all about coming out with something that can build up to that line. So I was driving around Lapaz, and I saw this well-dressed guy with the girlfriend seated by him in his car. They were kind of very happy but my only problem was the car.

You don’t expect such a beautiful girl and well-dressed guy to be in such a car. So I realize oh ok….I was trying to understand the reason why they were happy. So I realized, we should be content with whatever we have.

If the car does not look so good, they are still ok with it. It is kind of a priceless thing but they cherish it. That motivated me to record the song. Somewhere along the line, while recording the song, these whole ideas came up. ‘Lapaz Toyota’ is not referring to a lady rather appreciating something priceless,” he added.

Guru started singing and rapping during his school days. He was one of the rappers on Dr. Duncan’s program Kasahari on Adom FM and also on Rap Attack hosted by Upper Junior on Hot FM. Guru is the first WAPPI talent discovery of the 2008 artiste program held at British Council for underground music artistes. He first recorded a mixtape video with Sarkodie.

In 2009, he got his breakthrough when he featured on Obrafour’s ‘Kasiebo’. Since then, he has been shining. He subsequently released a single, ‘Democracy’ which became a 16-track album featuring the likes of Kwabena Kwabena, Wutah and a number of other artistes.

At the Ghana Music Awards 2011, he was nominated for ‘Best Rapper of the Year’ and ‘Hip Life Song of the Year’ for the same album. Indeed, Guru has registered his name on the annals of Ghana music. Currently, he has three singles- ‘Mmaa Kuo’, ‘Guru For President’ and ‘Lapaz Toyota’ which is reigning now.

Guru, born Nana Yaw Adjei Yeboah Maradona, hails from Nkoranza in the Brong Ahafo Region. He started his education at Rev. John Teye Memorial School, and continued at Apam Secondary then to NIIT and IPMC. He later pursued a marketing course at Zenith College.

"Pay Me $10,000 Or No Show" Kwaw Kese

Hiplife artiste Kwaw Kese (Real name: Emmanuel Botwe) has sent a straight forward message to event organizers and promoters, stating emphatically that from now he will not take anything less than $10,000 before he mounts any stage in Ghana, adding, that if the event is outside Ghana, he may charge about double or even more.

In an exclusive interview with Peacefmonline.com, the Abodam crooner said event organizers in Ghana do not treat artiste well professionally. He said aside the fact that most of them refuse to provide most of the things they ask for to be able perform well, they also dictate how much they want to pay artiste. “Event organizers must allow us as musicians to charge and stop imposing their prices on us at their own convenience.

They always expect us to put up world class performance but they refuse to pay us what we deserve. I think Ghanaian artistes deserve at least 50% of the amount event organizers pay foreign artistes to perform in Ghana”, Kwaw Kese stated.

He told Peacefmonline.com that before he gets on stage he has to pay his DJ, his bodyguard, his hype man, dancers, buy new clothes and if the show is outside Accra he has to provide accommodation and transportation for all these people but the amount organizers pay now cannot take care of all these people, so most often only the artiste comes on stage but professionally, the artiste alone is not enough.

The “Nonsense” hit maker believes that as an artiste $10, 000 will be enough for him to get everything like costume, props and stage craft right. “$10,000 is not too much it is a considerable amount that will be okay for me to put up a great show and perform from my heart. So from now it is $10,000 or no show”, Kwaw Kese emphasized.

He said most of the Ghanaian artistes perform better than artiste from other African countries but when event organizers bring other African artistes to perform in Ghana, they pay them huge amount of money.

Asked if he is aware that because they (Ghanaian musicians) are not united, if he insists on the $10,000 charge, some of his fellow musicians in Ghana may go behind him and take about half of that to perform on the same shows, Kwaw Kese said “Oh yes I know that some Ghanaian musicians who are reigning now may even take quarter of $10,000 because they are hungry and that is how they want to sell themselves. My fellow musicians shouldn’t just think about their stomach today and sell themselves cheap”.

Abodam stressed that other Ghanaian artistes who are on top now like Sarkodie, 4X4, Samini, VIP, Tinny, Castro, among others, equally deserve to be paid the same amount or more for performance but if they don’t sell themselves like that nobody would be ready to pay them that much. “This is the only way we can develop and brand ourselves like other African artistes who are going international”.

He said he is only speaking for himself but if his fellow musician follow his movements it will help grow the music industry, develop the musicians artistically and improve on stage craft in Ghana.

When it comes to stage craft and audience appeal in Ghana, Kwaw Kese stands tall. He has appeared on stage in different ways over the years including; A Santa Claus, he has come stage on bicycle, in a giant microphone, he has appeared on stage sitting in an ancient carriage, he been on stage with a donkey, in a Zoomlion apparel, as a soldier, as a king with crown among others and he said it take money be able to achieve all that.

Kwaw said anytime he mounts the stage, the crowd love him not because he is an extraordinary human being but because he is doing something right on stage but as time goes on he needs to up his game and improve. “I believe I need to be paid even more than that but for now it is just $10,000 or no show”.

Kwaw has being nominated from “Album of the Year”, “Artiste of the
Year”, “Hiplife/ Hip Hop artistes of the year” and “Hip Hop Song of the year” for the upcoming Ghana Music Awards 2012. Asked what his chances are, he said deserves to win all four categories but he will be very surprised if he doesn’t win the artiste of the year.

Armed Robbers Attack E-tv Presenter

The hostess of E-tv Ghana’s Late Nite Celebrity Show, Deborah Vanessa, was attacked last Friday by armed robbers on her way home from presenting that night’s edition of the popular entertainment show.

The random attack, which occurred around 23:30 that night, resulted in the robbers fleeing with her phone, car keys and digital camera.
She, thankfully, was left unharmed.

Deborah Vanessah had stopped at a female friend’s place at Dzorwulu when the unfortunate incident occurred. According to Deborah, the armed robbers attacked her with a machete and demanded money from her.
Recounting the ordeal, the TV personality explained that the machete-wielding criminals sprang from a dark blue coloured Toyota Corolla, employing a tactic which had her effectively boxed in between her friend’s gate the adjacent gutters and their Toyota.

“They threatened to break my side window with a machete and harm if I didn’t open the door so I unlocked my car and one of the robbers entered from the passenger side and started demanding money. He was like ‘where is the money, where is the money?’

To avoid physical harm, she allowed them to search the car thoroughly to prove that there was no money or laptop, as they demanded. The assailants, numbering at least two, escaped with her car keys, digital camera and her Blackberry. One was described as tall with a low haircut and the accomplice was short with unkempt hair.

Deborah, when speaking to E-tv Ghana news, said she had reported the incident to the police. She is in a healthy condition. Deobrah Vanessa broke the news to her fans on Facebook, prompting an outpouring of sympathy and supports from her many fans. “I am grateful that I came out of this unscathed but if anything positive has come out of this, it’s that I’ve been touched by the messages of support and encouragement I’ve received from my fans.”

Residents of Dzorwulu are being cautioned about such attacks in the area. Security expert, Alex Acquaye, who gives Etv Ghana viewers crucial security tips on Awake every Monday morning, commended Deborah Vanessa for the way she conducted herself in what was a highly stressful and dangerous situation.

This attack comes after Joy News entertainment reporter, Kweku Obeng Adjei, was robbed at gunpoint by three armed robbers last month. They made away with his Toyota Corolla, although there is no suspicion at present that these two events are in any way connected.

Keche’s song is from “Maame Water”

A prophet, Joshua Awuah Kwaku Kodon aka Odeefuor Pae Mu Ka has prophesised doom for hiplife duo, Keche over their latest hit song, Sokode.

According to the founder and General Overseer of Baiddo Gospel International Church at Akomadan in the Ashanti Region, unless the duo seek divine intervention, Sokode will be the last hit track for the group adding they will languish in obscurity for the next two years.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Drive Time show, Ofie Kwanso, Prophet Kodon explained that the hugely popular Sokode is a product of the spiritual realm and was first launched by the mystical sea goddess known in local parlance as ‘Maame Water’ before Keche released the song.

He claimed God had revealed to him that the song had been charmed resulting in it being irresistible to anybody who hears it, and attributed the popularity and immense airplay Sokode is enjoying now to the charms.

But Keche, comprising Andrew Kofi Cudjoe, aka Keche De, and Joshua Ampah aka Keche Pa, has rubbished Prophet Kodon’s claims that their song came from the spiritual realm.

Keche Pa told Adom Entertainment News that they began writing the song while they were returning home from a show at Sokode (a town in the Volta Region) and completed it later on to make it the hit.

He revealed that they were inspired by Sokode’s (the town) signpost while they were on their way to the town. They played around with the name and Sokode (the song) was crafted out of it so there is no way Prophet Kodom can be right.

The prophet however stuck to his guns and reiterated that Keche can be redeemed from the doom that lies ahead of them only when they seek the mercies of God.

Not stopping there, the prophet also had some very ‘interesting’ revelations about Ghana’s hottest rapper Sarkodie.

He claimed a 13-year old girl would be planted in Sarkodie’s life with whom he would have sexual relations and he would be accused of defilement.

Prophet Kodon said the plot has been hatched by a close friend of the rapper who is seeking his downfall.

Other celebrities like Lapaz Toyota star, Guru and Babie, the bubbly host of TV3 entertainment show, Hot Gossip all had their share of Odeefuor Pae Mu Ka’s prophecies.

He revealed that Babie would be shot dead by her fiancé resulting from a misunderstanding between them.

He however declined to give details of the revelation he had about Guru explaining that Guru’s family had solicited his help so they are taking measures spiritually to avert the situation.

The prophet also cautioned Ghanaians especially Christians and religious leaders not to encourage the Azonto dance because it is devilish and is sent to enslave the people.

Money Really Isn’t a Problem For Sarkodie, Check Out His New House And Car

Sarkodie has done something that no Ghanaian artist has ever done musically. Sarkodie has played more shows, toured almost around the world and one can tell none of them was free (can never be). I recently heard rumors that Sarkodie ditched his ‘life-starter’ Toyota Matrix and got himself a new ‘whip’ and also bought a new home at ‘Ashalley Botwe’. So far, no one needs to be told LIFE IS GOOD for Mr. Obidi. I’m sure he will always be proud of himself.
I just got hold of this picture and it’s Hammer of The last 2′s birthday today. One look at the picture and you can tell it’s a new home and new car. Who owns it? Hammer Or Sarkodie? Defo Mr. Obidi. God has really blessed you man and you should be proud of yourself. Check out the picture below.

Becca and Efya at war?

Efya      &   Becca
Two of Ghana’s top female musicians, Becca and Efya are believed to be at each others throats for what has been described by many in showbiz circle as a clash of the titans. The rumour mile has it that Efya actually left her group “Iren and Jane” to take on Becca because at a point she realized that the Daa k3 daa singer had virtually taken overvthe female side of the music industry. On the hand, we were told by a close source that Becca sees Efya as a crawling tortoise hence copying her ‘Becca’ style was to ingratiate herself as ‘Efya’.

Both artistes have five nominations in the upcoming VGMA which is expected to a hotly contested affair. So who rocks, Becca or Efya? They all can sing with a live band and have aquite similar way of dressing. So is Efya really copying Becca’s style or she’s doing better on a different dimension?

Over the last two years, Becca has been the highest paid female artiste in Ghana but is being given a run for her money by Efya. Well, the VGMA will determine the best especially where both top female songstress are categorized; ‘Artiste of the Year, The Best Female Vocal Artiste and The Song Writer of the Year.’

Both had their breakthroughs from reality shows, Becca from “Mentor 2” whilst Efya gained prominence from “Stars of the future 1.

ASEM's Label Addresses Claims Of Stolen Beat

WBDN RECORDS would like to inform media houses as well as the general public know that stories circulating about Asem stealing a song is absolutely false. The instrumental used on the ‘SHOW SOMETHING’ song featuring DJ Black and South African rapper JR was acquired by DJ Black of ToonToom Media and Joy FM with permission from purpman and producer of the instrumental.

There was an understanding that different artistes would be asked to use the beat and purpman would be featured on one of the versions which he agreed and was very exited about. Upon release of the song, information reached WBDN Records and ToomToom media about certain people throwing insults on DJ Black and especially Asem on Blackberry and twitter for using the beat but these insults were ignored because there was permission to use the beat.

WBDN records therefore got in touch with one Kweku Okanta, manager of purpman who was championing the reign of insults. After several unpleasant insults from Kweku Okanta to Kofi Korang Director of WBDN Records almost as if it was intentional provocation, Director of WBDN Records who felt Kweku was beign very unprofessional, immediately asked Kweku for his business case bec ause WBDN records has no time for insults and name calling.

Kweku then asked for a specified amount of money as was expected saying that Asem is a big artiste and he has been told by some people in Ghana that Asem has endorsement deals. He also added that there were some media people who are eager to publish articles and give Asem bad press if WBDN records didn’t comply.

There was also threats to sue Asem for copyright infringement. This being a preferred course of action for WBDN records , Kofi Korang asked for copyright details from Kweku Okanta and also asked WBDN records agents in the USA and UK to search the worldwide repertoire database and find out if there is a Purpman or a track title Mr. Okanta claims to have copyrights to. There is no such record.

Upon realising that the plot had failed Kweku Okanta then revealed that the issue was not something he really wanted to pursue. He added there are some ’journalists’ and celebrities in Ghana who are making moves and putting pressure on him and purpman to act as such.
He added purpman is still eager to work with Asem and DJ Black in the future. This is not the first time people have tried to defame Asem. From the onset of Asem’s career his management has been receiving complaints from some djs that they sometimes get threatening calls telling them to stop playing Asem’s music.
In Dec 2010 WBDN received an anonymous call saying that there was a group of people in the entertainment industry plotting something really malicious against Asem.

WBDN therefore would like to use this medium to let people know that Asem who is currently promoting his new album SOLID GROUND with hit single bye bye featuring Kwabena kwabena is focused on his goal of international acclaim and has no time to meddle in schemes and plots against him as an artiste.

I Just Love To Sing, But I Sing More Than I Love It

THE BIOGRAPHY
"Like the way he grabs the mic...with lots of style, and powerful notes to strike...
Ready to make all and sundry falls for it and like...so is his lifestyle...
Intertwined with perseverance to reach for the best and humor to make you sigh...
In simple words, he's got a unique profile...one that Ghana music is yet to see."

At a very tender age Agyemang Kofi Offeh (known in show biz as NINO),had  love for music and made it captured his heart and mind; he was so engrossed in it that even when playing football with friends, he will be singing alongside. His concentration will be on the notes instead but not the ball. Music was and is still his cherished hobby and talent. Little did he know that his cherished hobby (music/singing) will one day become a sort after (sacred and scarce) 'commodity' of man? He grew up mastering his talent with less difficulty because music was like brushing the teeth.

Nino's hobby and talent came to the limelight when he joined the Adventist Prep School choir; he was one of the best soloists to have appeared in that choir. Before leaving the school as a Junior High School graduate, he represented Kumasi in the year 2002-2003, and was adjudged the best singer at the national choral competition. Nino has since that time become very vital and a force to reckon with in every choir he joins.

Nino continued his powerful renditions in his Secondary school days in Prempeh College. He was part of the famous trio on campus (Kunta.Tintin.Scobo…KTS). Nino is not only a musician; he has also graduated with Bachelor of Business Administration honors in banking and finance at Valley View University. It was at Valley View University that he realized it was time for him to tell and show the world what he's got in him. His love for music pushed him to form an Accapella singing group among his peers. He did not relent on his efforts, he continued by forming another strong and talented choir (the minstrel choir) with the children of the lecturers of the University. In fact, his name is still on the lips of those who saw him and have also seen him perform on various platforms-…”he’s got to perform on bigger stage like the Ghana music awards”…said a student at one the shows organize by NINO and his crew (vitae inc.).

All forms of music genres are at his fingertips, be it Classical, Soul, RnB, Jazz, Highlife, Accapella or Choral music. The most intriguing part is, whether in English, Twi or French language the output is always fantastic. He sang and continues to sing with passion and zeal. “Anytime he sang the whole campus was move”…another student reiterated. A lot of stars in the music industry has endorsed him; Morris De Voice, Jay Ghartey, Kunta kinte of Bradez fame knows him best, that is to mention but a few.
He also realized his leadership qualities and organizational abilities in the same environment. He was the organizing secretary for the Business Administration Students Association from 2010-2011 academic year. During his time as the organizer, the association saw massive improvements in its activities in terms of proper management and program organization.

Jay-Z Bans the B-Word; Big Deal!

In an entry at Just Khaotic, Dr. Boyce Watkins uses harsh analogies to underscore his disgust with Jay-Z's announcement that he will stop using the word "bitch" in his rhymes after having a baby girl. He should have stopped 20 years ago, Watkins writes.
... You can’t spend two decades referring to other men’s daughters as b*tches and hoes, and then somehow decide that your own daughter is going to be exempt from the game. You, my brother, have given nearly every inch of your creative productivity toward murdering your daughter’s self and public image before she was even born. In other words, you brought Blue Ivy Carter into a world where most of your biggest fans will look at her and refer to her not as daddy’s little princess, but instead as a dirty little b*tch.  I fact, they will even get paid for it.
Jay-Z trying to ban the word b*tch after giving birth to a girl is like a mass murderer asking other killers to be nice to his relatives.  His music has helped to infect the world with the virus of misogyny, and now he wants to act like the Center for Disease Control.  He’s like the homophobic pastor who leads anti-gay lynch mobs and later finds out that his own son is gay.  It’s actually quite funny if you think about it.
Perhaps Jay-Z will now learn the frustrations of millions of other fathers who’ve been long hurt that so many hip-hop artists have trained black men to show the utmost disrespect for their little girls.  He will know what it’s like to have a “tatted up” Jay-Z/Lil Wayne wannabe earn his daughter’s loyalty because he convinces her that she can’t do any better.  He will spend the remainder of his years reaping everything he’s spent his life sowing, and end up paying the piper handsomely after getting rich by teaching other men to hate his child ...

Ghana Music Award Festival Restructured

Three new categories have been added to this year’s Ghana movie awards ceremony dubbed Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA). This is part of a restructuring process to present a controversial free award ceremony in 2012.

The categories include Gospel Album of the Year, Group of the Year and Sound Engineer Of the Year, which was defined as engineer adjudged by peers and the VGMA Board (Planning Committee) to be the sound engineer directly responsible for the recording, mastering and technical treatment of a nominated song during the year under review.

The Gospel Album of the Year category was defined as an album adjudged by the award’s Academy (Selection Committee) and Board as the most outstanding compilation of hit Gospel songs that was released during the year under review. It must have generated the most excitement during the year.

The Group of the Year was explained as artistes adjudged by the Academy, Board and the general public as the group with the highest audience appeal and popularity. They must comprise of at least two (2) or more members and must have released a hit single/album during the year under review.

The announcement was made known at a press conference organised by Charterhouse on Thursday at GH ONE premises, to inform the media about some changes in this year’s event. The ceremony was also used to unveil the award’s Technical Review team which consists of Amandzeba, George Gyimah (Phamous Philms), Nacy (No Tribe), Kwame Faakye, Kiki Banson, Bessa Simons, Richie Mensah (Lynx), Diana Hopeson, Abraham Ohene Gyan, Fred Kyei Mensah, David Kyei (Kaywa) and Joseph Addison (Killbeat).

The rest were Sammy Forson, Okyeame Kwame, Arnold Asamoah Baidoo, Paul Nuamah Donkor (Jay So), Appiah Dankwa (Appiatus) and DJ Andy Dosty.
Currently, the number of award categories has shot up from 26 to 29 categories. The categories for the VGMA were also reviewed to include 15 Public Voting categories, 12 Industry Voting Categories and 3 Honorary Categories.

Generally, there had been some significant changes. The term ‘commercial release’ was redefined to take cognizance of new digital channels of music distribution, for example Youtube, Facebook, Twitter and RBT/CRBT.

As a result, the word ‘commercial’ was dropped because some of the channels are non-commercial e.g. Twitter, Youtube etc.
The VGMA Calendar year has also changed from November to December 1 2010 to December 31, 2011.  Hence,
to be eligible for the VGMA 2012, an artiste’s work should have been released from December 1, 2010 to December 31, 2011.

Meanwhile, the VGMA will maintain the 3-tier voting system of the public, the VGMA Academy and the VGMA Board. With Public Voting Awards, the public has 40% votes, VGMA Academy (Selection Committee) – 30%, and the VGMA Board (Planning Committee) – 30%.

Industry Voting Awards comes with 50% for VGMA Academy and another 50% for VGMA Board. Honorary Awards: VGMA Board – 100%. Sound Engineer, Music Video, Music Producer: VGMA Board and Peer voting and finally Most Popular Song will be decided by Public – 100%.

Other new changes in the voting system include the addition of new channels including online voting via www.ghanamusicawards.com and voting on mobile phone via short code.

Charterhouse, organizers of the award ceremony, announced that it has opened up entries for nominations and nomination forms have been circulated nationwide since January 1 and will last through to January 21. The award ceremony will be held in April after a huge nominations party very soon.

Kwaw Kese And The Madness Robbed

Controversial hiplife musician, Kwaw Kese popularly known as Abodam has been robbed, Sunday dawn by an unknown assailants at his residence at the Manet Gardens at Spintex.
The incident took place at about 4:30 am when the artiste and four other occupants of the three-bedroom apartment were asleep.
According to Kwaw, known in real life as Emmanuel Abrompah Botchwey, the assailants “broke through one of the windows and took two laptops (including a Mac Book Pro) and an iPod.”
He told Myjoyonline.com they did not see the assailants but were certain that they could be coming from the neighborhood.
The King of the Streets further narrated that, the thieves used a glued stick to pick the laptops and subsequently pulled them through the window, saying that but for an alarm from one of the occupants of the house the burglars would have made away with all four laptops.
He said the laptops contained several important materials including yet to be released works – songs and videos – which are “worth thousands of dollars. It is worth a lot.”
Asked if he had reported the incident to the police, Kwaw was quick to say, “I think the society can help me better,” calling on his fans and the general public to be vigilant to help him get his laptop – which is being protected by a password and has his images on it at the back.
He explained that although he believes the police can work on the case for him, “it takes a whole lot of time” to get results adding, “I want my thing now … the world should help me find it.”

Lord Kenya declares ‘War’ on drugs

Former Hip-life star and now Gospel Musician, Abraham Philip Akor Kojo Kenya, popularly known as Lord Kenya, had told The Globe Newspaper that his heart bleeds for many Hip life musicians who according to him continue to use drugs.

Lord Kenya who is now a preacher based in Kumasi said he keeps praying for such Musicians and hopes they would encounter God and repent.

He said, “a lot of them (musicians) use drugs and even when I was singing no one knew I was on drugs”.

Lord Kenya who is now dedicated to the Lord says it is sometimes difficult to identify musicians who really do drugs until it become obvious, adding that the effect is severe.

He alluded the practice of drug use to works of the devil; “That’s how bad the devil can act and deceive people”, he said. The talented 33-year old musician reflected on how he became a drug addict saying “In my case I was introduced to it by my friends.

I started from one roll then I realized that oh that is okay, and gradually I was just taking it on daily basis then it became hourly and minutes…”

He cautioned Musicians who have resorted to alcohol to desist from alcoholism.

According to him drug addiction starts from alcoholism, “it all starts from becoming an alcoholic and becoming adaptive to other destructive substances”, he said.

Lord Kenya who is now focusing on his calling to preach the Gospel is bent on winning the souls of his fellow musicians for God and sees that as his greatest task on earth. Lord Kenya added that he has not abandoned his music career, but he is now focused on gospel music.
